Mac permissions and microphone

Check Microphone, Accessibility, Input Monitoring, and the system input device.

Check access in the Mac app

Open Settings → System access in Whisper One and inspect the permission states. macOS wording can vary by system version. The app needs microphone access to record and Accessibility and Input Monitoring access for its Fn workflow.

Review the Mac permissions

  1. Open macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Allow the app to use the microphone.
  2. Check Accessibility and Input Monitoring in Privacy & Security. Follow the app's setup guidance to enable the required access.
  3. If macOS asks you to quit and reopen the app, do so, then check the states again. Grant access to the app copy you are actually running.
  4. Open a note, place the cursor, and make a short Fn test recording.

Choose the microphone Fn uses

Fn dictation follows the macOS system input device. In Whisper One, Settings → Audio → Fn microphone → Change system input opens the relevant system settings. Select the input under Sound → Input and check its input level while speaking. The in-app microphone selector applies to in-app recordings, so changing it alone does not change the Fn input.

A quick check

This is a microphone check. I am speaking into the device selected in the Mac Sound settings.

You should see the system input level respond, then receive text after finishing the recording. If a Bluetooth device disconnects or you switch microphones, verify the system input again and record a new test.

If permission looks enabled but Fn is unavailable, reopen the app and review both Accessibility and Input Monitoring. Avoid changing many settings at once; test after each meaningful change so you know what resolved the problem.
