Troubleshooting & your data

Fix a dictation problem

Find the next step for shortcut, sound, transcription, insertion, or quota issues.

Find the stage that failed

Start with a short recording in Notes and a visible cursor. Distinguish a shortcut problem, a silent microphone, a transcription error, and a text insertion problem. They need different fixes.

Fn does not start recording

Open Settings in the app and review System access. Check both Accessibility and Input Monitoring in macOS Privacy & Security, as well as Microphone. If the system requests a restart of the app, reopen it and test again.

Recording starts but no speech is detected

Check System Settings → Sound → Input and speak while watching the input level. Fn uses the system input device. Recheck it after a headset disconnects or you switch devices. The app's internal microphone selector does not change Fn input.

Recognition fails or shows an account error

Check your connection. If asked to sign in, sign in again. If the account has reached its allowance, inspect usage and the available plan options before recording again. This version does not let you retranscribe a failed audio recording; make a new recording once the cause is resolved.

Text is missing from the target app

Look at the target field first to avoid duplicating text. If the transcription was saved, open History, select it, press Command + C, and paste it manually. An empty history entry does not prove the audio was recognized.

Wrong words or an unexpected language

Chinese and English currently work best; other language support is rolling out. Speak clearly, reduce background noise, and check the recognition language setting. For long content, split longer recordings into short sections of around 30 seconds. Correct proper nouns and numbers before sending.

Describe a reproducible problem

In Notes, Fn started recording, but I received no text. Microphone permission was enabled. The system input meter did not move with my headset selected.

When contacting support through the site's contact channel, include the app version, macOS version, device type, what you expected, and the exact visible error. Do not send account tokens, private recordings, or full confidential transcripts.
